Who Should Attend?
This session is designed for academic and administrative staff, internationalisation officers, and curriculum developers who seek to strengthen internationalisation efforts while leveraging India’s rich domestic diversity alongside global influences. Rooted in India’s traditions of scholarship, multilingualism, and cross-cultural exchange, the workshop aims to foster mutual dialogue that integrates Indian perspectives into the broader discourse on IaH.
Session Highlights
The session will build on the British Council’s Strengthening Capacity Building Programme, which supports Indian HEIs in:
- Developing institutional internationalisation strategies
- Establishing and running international offices
- Aligning with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020’s internationalisation agenda
Recognising the deep expertise of British universities in internationalisation, this session will explore how Indian HEIs can enhance their global engagement while building on their own strengths and traditions.
Why Internationalisation at Home (IaH)?
IaH is defined as “the purposeful integration of international and intercultural dimensions into the formal and informal curriculum for all students within domestic learning environments” (Beelen & Jones, 2015).
Since only a small percentage of students participate in study abroad programmes, IaH plays a critical role in making internationalisation more accessible, inclusive, and sustainable. It fosters global citizenship and cross-cultural understanding while leveraging institutional diversity.
This workshop will introduce participants to the UUKi Internationalisation at Home Handbook, a free and open-source guide to developing, implementing, and reviewing IaH initiatives. Attendees will gain insights into how they can:
- Assess existing IaH activities
- Integrate best practices
- Enhance their institution’s internationalisation strategies
Key Areas of Focus
- The session will explore practical strategies for embedding internationalisation across three key dimensions:
Formal Curriculum:
- Integrating global perspectives, intercultural learning outcomes, and diverse case studies within courses and credit-bearing activities
- Implementing Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL)
Informal Curriculum:
- Enhancing student engagement through cultural exchanges, buddy programs, and virtual collaborations
Hidden Curriculum:
- Building an inclusive campus environment through institutional policies, student services, and cross-cultural initiatives
Join Us!
This session will provide valuable insights for institutions seeking to create globally engaged campuses and balance India’s growing emphasis on inbound student mobility. Attendees will leave with a systematic framework for implementing IaH in their own institutional contexts.
We look forward to welcoming you to this important discussion on shaping the future of internationalisation in Indian higher education!
